Do Shopify Stores Need to Register for Sales Tax?

Shopify stores themselves do not register for sales tax accounts—your business entity does. Whether you operate as an LLC, corporation, or sole proprietorship, the legal entity behind the store is the one that registers with the state for sales tax.

Once your entity is registered, you will receive a sales tax ID (or permit), which you then use to configure tax collection within your Shopify store (for example, in Shopify).

It’s also important to note that a single entity can operate multiple Shopify stores and sell across different channels (such as marketplaces or social platforms). All of these sales must be consolidated and reported when filing your sales tax returns.
